the Lena Romano Memorial Scholarship
Honoring a Legacy of Courage, Compassion, and Hope for Future Generations in Healthcare
ABOUT THIS SCHOLARSHIP FUND
Honoring the Life and Legacy of Lena Romano
Lena Romano was a beacon of strength, resilience, and compassion. Born on August 13, 1983, her extraordinary journey came to an end far too soon on October 7, 2023, at the age of 40, following complications during a heart transplant at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Despite the challenges she faced throughout her life, Lena carried herself with unwavering positivity, touching and inspiring countless lives along the way.
As one of the longest-living individuals with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS), Lena defied the odds and became a powerful example of perseverance and hope. Her story reflects not only her strength, but her deep appreciation for life, opportunity, and the importance of pushing forward—no matter the obstacles.
This scholarship was established by Lena’s family to honor her life and the values she embodied. It reflects her belief in education, her determination to overcome adversity, and her ability to inspire others to live with purpose.
By supporting students as they pursue higher education—regardless of their chosen path—this scholarship carries forward Lena’s legacy: a life defined by courage, kindness, and an enduring impact on others. Her story will continue to inspire for generations to come.
